  1. Lead Like a Pirate has been a good read for me professionally even though I am not currently pursing a dream of being an administrator. It gave me some tips and ideas how to lead as a teacher and a colleague. It gave me different ideas on what I want in my administration. There were a few things I want to bring up to our current administration to try in our school.

What I didn't like was minimal- It was repetitive at times but there is also good in that to get the points across. I would have liked more ideas to implement right now in my school but they did give some.

What I liked about the book study format itself- I enjoyed the document where I can just click the link and go to the assignment. I liked the quizzes were easily understood if you read the material and immediately scored. The videos brought an element with a different message but enforced the material presented. I liked that I could do it on my own time on this Christmas break and I was gung-ho about the book so it went quickly for me as I wanted to keep reading and I did not have to wait for anyone else.

What was disappointing was that I was either the first to respond in blog posts or second so not many opportunities to learn from others. I hoped I was thorough in my answers for future readers. I know this is because it was a new book which is why I chose it. I may come back and check it out at a later date.

I am most definitely going to recommend this book to a colleague. There are a couple younger teachers that have expressed interest in becoming administrators and I think that this would be a good first read. I have already thought about contacting them with the information.

  2. I liked how easy the course guide was to follow. The assignments were short and simple to complete. I also liked the video links.

I didn’t like that this was geared toward principals or people who have help with leadership roles. I wish I had completed Teach Like a Pirate first.

Yes, I would definitely recommend this book study.

  3. I always enjoy doing the book studies. I've completed almost all of them and wish there were more to do! I love being able to complete them at my own pace and I love the ideas I get from them. I recommend these book studies to all of my colleagues!

  4. This is the fourth book study I have done through this program and I am once again very pleased with it. The blogs allow me to really reflect and think about myself as a teacher and where I want to go in my future. I am able to continuously think about how I can become a better teacher, colleague, and leader. The self-paced course makes it easy for me to work on it in my free time. I can confidently say that there is nothing that I did not like about this course. I will be sure to recommend this book study to my colleagues.

  6. I always like these book studies and I hope you continue to add more! This one was a little out of my comfort zone because being in administration has never been on my radar, however it does give me ideas of how I can be a leader in my current role as a teacher.

  7. I really enjoyed this book. It is nice to read a book from the perspective on administration. I think sometimes there is a disconnect between teachers and admin. I also liked how this book gives good advice about any type of leadership. My son and I spoke about it pertaining to his basketball team, as he is the point guard and has to be the leader often on the court and balance the players strengths and his coaches strengths as well. I really liked the chapters about The power of words, and finding the magic in people, not programs. I will take a lot of this book and use it in my professional work as well as my personal life.

  9. This book did not relate to me directly, as I have no desire to become an administrator. However, I did think it provided good insight into the lives of administrators and some of the things they try to implement or even different leadership styles that administrators have. Good book, would definitely recommend to someone looking into going into a leadership role.

  10. Having recently retired, I found this book to be something every administrator should read. I've had those awesome administrators and then others. I had no desire to be an administrator. I feel this book gives practical ideas and provides insight where maybe an administrator might feel overwhelmed or tired. This is a great read and I would encourage others in Education to read it.

  11. I really appreciate these book studies! I found this one to be very practical and even though I'm not an administrator - there are take aways that I could immediately apply to my own team. I appreciate how flexible it is to complete these on our own pace. I dove in right away in January - but then had a few unexpected things come up that delayed my progress. I was able to pick back up the past few weeks and complete it without any problems. Thanks for making these available!

  12. I enjoyed this book after having also read "Teach Like a Pirate." It was neat to see how they played off of each other. I also enjoyed the perspective of school leadership and I believe this could be a very beneficial book for all principals to read!

I also liked the layout of the book with the different sections. It made it easy to follow and understand.

I do wish there had been a bit more on leadership in teachers.

  13. I liked this course as an extension of Teach Like A Pirate. Geared towards those in leadership roles, but applicable to a teacher. Because teachers are also leaders of their students and often co-workers. I wish more leaders would have access to this book. I really enjoyed the graphics and acronyms of the book layout, including quote boxes and different fonts. The book study was very cohesive and the questions were applicable to many life situations. I think it would be fun to show a clip of Dave Burgess in the Video section to tie the two studies together and help us recall what we learned (for those of use who did that book study or read the book)

After reading Teach Like a Pirate and this book, I found it interesting to compare the two books. I did feel like I could connect to this book more then I initially thought I was going to be able to, as it first felt very admin focused.

I enjoyed the flow of this book and found each chapter engaging. The distinct sections broke up the content well, so it never felt overwhelming. I would definitely recommend this book to a colleague; however, I believe you need to be in a 'leadership mindset' to truly find it engaging and worthwhile.

  15. I think this would be an awesome book for teachers, leaders, coaches, administration, or anyone interested in education. I liked the book, it challenged me, I liked the part about finding the magic in people and not programs. I think that valuing people and their ideas, and offering support is a good idea. I appreciated the fact that it was repeated over and over to watch what you say, how you say it, be authentic, but take the judgement out of it. I think this is something many of us could use some relearning in this area of communication with others.
